Paint is the one repair everyone can see — which is why it is the one repair worth doing properly or not at all. At Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center in Jersey City, paint work happens in our own booth, on our own schedule: a full panel from $800, a bumper from $450, and the colour matched against your actual car — not just the code on the door jamb.

What We Paint

• Single panels after body repair. A fender or door repaired and painted starts at $600 — the most common job in the shop.
• Full-panel resprays from $800, when a scratch has gone through the colour or an old repair has started to show.
• Bumpers from $450 — plastic prep is its own craft, covered in detail on our bumper repair page.
• Wheels — curb rash refinishing at $150–$350 a wheel and powder coating from $75 a rim live on the wheel repair side of the shop.
• Full resprays and colour changes — quoted individually after we see the car, because the honest number depends on trim removal, jambs and what the old paint is hiding.

Colour Is Matched Against the Car, Not the Code

The paint code narrows the colour to a family; it does not end the conversation. Three summers of New Jersey sun shift a silver half a shade, and the same factory code sprays differently on plastic than on steel. So the painter sprays out test cards, checks them against your panels in daylight, and adjusts until the card disappears against the car.

Then comes the part that separates a paint shop from a spray gun: blending. Silver, white pearl and most metallics cannot be painted panel-by-panel without a visible edge, so the colour is faded into the neighbouring panels and the whole area cleared. One damaged door can honestly mean paint on three surfaces — which is why a quote that sounds too cheap usually is: it prices one panel and skips the blend.

The Process — and Why "Same-Day Paint" Is a Red Flag

Repair the surface, prime, seal, colour coats, clear coat, cure, then cut and polish. Each stage has a clock that chemistry sets, not the front desk: clear coat rushed out of the booth shrinks around sanding marks weeks later and dies back to dull. An honest panel takes three to seven days including the body work — a promise of same-day colour on a repaired panel means a corner is getting cut somewhere you will find next spring.

Will a Repaint Hurt Resale?

A dealer appraiser hunts for repaints with a thickness gauge, and a badly blended panel is a price cut waiting to happen. Three honest answers to that:

• If the paint is intact, do not paint. A dent with unbroken finish comes out with paintless dent repair and the factory paint stays — nothing to find, nothing to disclose.
• If the scratch is only in the clear coat, polishing may erase it for less than any respray. We check with the panel in front of us and say so when polish wins.
• If it needs colour, blend it properly. A blended, cleared, documented repair reads factory to the eye — and you keep the photos and the written warranty on qualifying repairs.

Insurance or Out of Pocket?

Cosmetic paint work sits right at the deductible line: a $600 door against a $500 deductible is barely a claim, and a small claim can follow your renewal price for years. The decision math — when to file, when to just fix it — is worked through in cosmetic damage and insurance. When it is part of a collision claim, we write the estimate in the carrier's format and bill them directly.
