Car scratch repair · Jersey City, NJ
Polish it if we can, paint it only if we must.
Scratched, scuffed or keyed? A clear-coat scratch polishes out (a whole-car machine polish starts at $499), chips and short scratches take a $599 touch-up, and deeper scratches are refinished in our own booth — bumpers from $450, doors and fenders from $600, a full panel from $800. Send photos and a real estimator tells you which fix you need, the same business day.
Most scratches are smaller jobs than they look. Run a fingernail across the mark: if the nail glides over it, the damage is in the clear coat and usually polishes out; if it catches, the color layer is cut and that spot needs paint. At Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center in Jersey City, the fix runs from a $499 whole-car machine polish or a $599 touch-up for chips to refinishing in our own booth — a bumper from $450, a door or fender from $600, a full panel from $800.
Which Kind of Scratch Do You Have?
- Clear-coat scratch. The nail glides over it and the line looks whitish, not a different color; wet it and it nearly disappears. Wash swirls, a jacket zipper, a bag dragged over the bumper — the cheapest kind to fix.
- Through the color. The nail catches, but the bottom of the groove is still your color. Polishing softens the edges; it cannot put paint back.
- Down to primer or metal. Gray or white at the bottom is primer; bright silver is bare metal. On a plastic bumper the groove shows black or gray plastic — no rust, but it still needs paint.
- Scuffs and paint transfer. Paint from another car's bumper or a garage column sits on top of yours and often polishes off, so scuff repair can start and end with a polisher.
- Keyed panel. A long line drawn with pressure, usually across more than one panel and through the clear into the color. It rarely polishes out completely.
Scratch Removal, Touch-Up or Paint: What Each Fix Involves
Paint correction. A machine polisher levels the clear coat to the bottom of a shallow scratch so the line stops catching light; two and three steps take out deeper defects and wash swirls. Clear coat is thinner than a sheet of paper, so a scratch that catches a nail is not polished until it is gone — that would cut through the clear around it.
Touch-up. Stone chips and short scratches are filled with color-matched paint and leveled, without respraying the panel. It seals exposed metal and makes chips far less noticeable, but it will not make a long scratch vanish — we say so before you pay for one.
Refinish and blend. Once the color is cut, the area is sanded, primed where needed and painted in our booth with Maxytone refinish mixed in our own mixing room, starting from your VIN formula and a spectrophotometer reading of the panel (the full process is on our auto painting and color matching page). Metallic and pearl flakes settle a little differently with every spray, so even the right formula can look a shade off beside the old panel at an angle. Fading the color into the neighboring panel leaves the eye no edge to find — that is why blending is its own line, priced per panel, and not an upsell.
How Much Does Car Scratch Repair Cost in Jersey City?
| Your scratch | Repair | Typical price | Time in the shop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear-coat scratches, swirls, paint transfer | Paint correction — machine polish, whole car | $499 one-step · $799 two-step · $999 three-step | 1–2 days |
| Stone chips, short scratches | Touch-up, no full panel | $599 | 1 day |
| Longer scratch or scuff through the color — bumper | Bumper repair and paint | from $450 | 2–3 days |
| Longer scratch through the color — door or fender | Door or fender repair and paint | from $600 | 3–7 days |
| Down to primer or metal, or a long key line | Full-panel respray | from $800 | 3–7 days |
| Metallic or pearl color | Blending an adjacent panel | added per panel | same visit |
| Dent, paint unbroken | Paintless dent repair | $150–$450 per dent | same day to 2 days |
| Dent with broken paint | Dent repair and refinish | $500–$1,200 | 3–7 days |
| Whole car or color change | Full respray | quoted after inspection | scheduled individually |
There is no honest per-scratch price: paint is done and priced by the panel, so two scratches on one door are one job, and one scratch that crosses onto the fender is two panels. A scuffed bumper that also cracked is a bumper repair, and a door ding that only picked up paint transfer may come out with paintless dent repair.
Keyed Car Repair: Insurance or Your Own Pocket?
Keying is vandalism, which falls under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, not collision. Before you decide:
- Check that you carry comprehensive. A liability-only policy pays for other people's cars, never yours.
- Find your comprehensive deductible. It is set separately from the collision one; your declarations page shows both.
- File a police report. Many carriers ask for the report number on a vandalism claim.
Then compare. A key line along both doors and a rear quarter panel is three panels of refinish plus blending; one short mark on a single door can cost less than the deductible. On a long key line we quote it both ways — a stripe of touch-up or a partial respray of each panel — and tell you which one will look right. At renewal, carriers usually weigh a comprehensive claim more lightly than an at-fault collision; the rest of the math is in our guide to cosmetic damage and when insurance should pay. New Jersey lets you choose the shop; if you file, we write the estimate in the carrier's format and bill them directly, and you pay the deductible.
What Not to Do While You Wait
- No abrasive scratch removers or hand compound. They haze and thin the clear around the scratch, and clear that is gone cannot be polished later.
- No touch-up pen on long or deep scratches. It dries as a raised line in a slightly different shade and has to be sanded out before the panel can be painted.
- No waiting on bare metal. Exposed steel starts to rust within weeks, and rust creeping under the paint makes the repair bigger. Fix it before the winter salt.
- No wax before the photos. It fills the scratch and hides the depth that decides the price.
Keep the Next Scratch Off: Paint Protection Film
Everyday scratches land in the same places: the front bumper and hood edge, door edges, the cups behind the door handles, the top of the rear bumper. Clear film there takes the hit instead of the paint. We install XPEL, with STEK USA also available; its top layer heals light swirls and fine scratches with warmth. It will not stop a determined key, but it handles everyday marks, and we can quote paint protection film on the same estimate as the repair.
