Wheel powder coating · Jersey City, NJ

Stripped, coated, oven-cured, $200 a wheel, all in.

Curbed, peeling or just the wrong color? We powder coat wheels in our own shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave: $200 a wheel or $800 for a set of four, with the tire taken off, remounted and balanced. Bring the wheels or the whole car, and they are back in as little as 24 hours.

Wheel powder coating at Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center is $200 a wheel, everything included: the tire comes off, the wheel is stripped, blasted, powder-coated and oven-cured, and the tire goes back on and is balanced. A set of four is $800. The work is done in our own shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave in Jersey City, not sent out to a coater, and the wheels are back in as little as 24 hours. Against curbs, brake dust and road salt, it is the toughest finish we put on a wheel.

What $200 a Wheel Covers

One price covers everything from the wheel coming off the car to the wheel ready to go back on. There is no separate charge for dismounting, mounting or balancing.

  1. Inspection. Every wheel is checked for bends, cracks and old repairs first, because powder shows the metal exactly as it is.
  2. Tire off. The tire, balance weights, valve stem and TPMS sensor come off and are set aside.
  3. Stripped and blasted. The old finish and any corrosion come off, down to bare aluminum.
  4. Coated and cured. The powder is applied electrostatically, so it clings evenly, between the spokes too, and the oven melts it into one continuous layer.
  5. Tire back on. Mounted and balanced, with the sensor checked, ready for the car.

How Much Does Wheel Powder Coating Cost in Jersey City?

The coating itself is a fixed price. Everything else in the table depends on the condition of the wheel underneath, and it is priced from your photos:

JobWhat it involvesPrice
Powder coating, one wheelTire off, stripped, blasted, coated, oven-cured, tire back on and balanced$200
Powder coating, set of fourThe same for all four wheels, in one color$800
Bent rim straighteningOn a lathe before coating, then leak-tested$150–$300 per wheel
Curb rash and deep gougesFilled and leveled before coatingquoted on the photos
Crack repair, where safeShort crack away from load-bearing areas: welded, re-machined, pressure-tested$200–$400 per wheel
Machined or diamond-cut faceNot powder-coated: the face is re-cut on a lathe and re-cleared$250–$400 per wheel
Replacement wheelWhen a wheel cannot be saved: sourced, mounted and balancedfrom $250 per wheel

For example, four clean wheels are $800; four wheels with one bent by a pothole are $800 plus $150–$300 to straighten that one. How a bent rim is measured and straightened is on our wheel and rim repair page. A TPMS sensor that has already failed is not part of the $200: replacing it adds $60–$120 per wheel, as on our tire services page.

How Long Does Wheel Powder Coating Take?

As little as 24 hours from drop-off; stripping to bare metal, coating and a full oven cure set that clock. Straightening a bend or filling gouges comes first and can add time, and you get the realistic timeline with your quote.

  • Drop off just the wheels, tires still mounted. They come back coated, remounted and balanced, ready to bolt on.
  • Or bring the car. Taking the wheels off and putting them back on is part of the job. If you need to keep driving, bring the wheels in one at a time.

The shop is at 18-24 Bayview Ave in Greenville, minutes off Route 440 and NJ Turnpike Exits 14A and 14B, open every day from 8 am to 8 pm.

Colors and Finishes

Powder is picked from a catalog rather than mixed to a paint code, so the range is wide but not endless. The first decision is the sheen:

  • Gloss — shiny and reflective.
  • Satin — a soft sheen, halfway between gloss and flat.
  • Matte — flat, with no reflection at all.

Black in any of the three, gunmetal, bronze and silver are the classic wheel colors, and a color change on a clean set costs the same $800. Tell us what you have in mind when you send photos, and we show you the options before we quote. What powder cannot do is match a paint code: if you want your exact body color, that is wet paint, color-matched in our booth.

When We Will Not Powder Coat a Wheel

Powder is a finish, not a repair, and it hides nothing. These wheels get a different answer:

  • Cracked in a load-bearing area — the barrel, a spoke or the hub face. That wheel is replaced, from $250. We do not coat over a crack.
  • Still bent. Powder copies the shape of the metal, wobble included, so the rim is straightened and measured again before it is coated.
  • Machined or diamond-cut faces. Powder would bury the bright lathe-turned face, so the face is re-cut and re-cleared instead.
  • Chrome. It has to be stripped completely before powder will stick, and that costs more than most chrome wheels are worth.
  • Forged or multi-piece wheels with structural damage. Cosmetic work only, and only after the structure checks out.
  • One curbed wheel next to three factory-painted ones. It gets a color-matched refinish in wet paint ($150–$350), so it disappears next to the other three.

The reasoning behind each of these, and how powder compares with wet paint, is in our guide to what powder coating wheels costs.

How to Get a Powder Coating Quote

The quote is free and starts with photos:

  1. Photograph each wheel straight on and at an angle, plus a close-up of any bend, crack or deep gouge.
  2. Add the size and the car. The wheel diameter is the number after the R on the tire sidewall, so R18 means an 18-inch wheel. Year, make and model help too.
  3. Name the color and sheen you want, or ask us for options.

Send them through the free photo estimate; we answer in English, Spanish or Russian. A real estimator, not a bot, replies the same business day with a written price that includes any repair the photos show. Prefer to talk it through? Call (551) 325-3030. If you are paying yourself, ask about paying over time with Affirm or American First Finance when we send the quote; financing is subject to approval and is provided by those lenders, not by Waxman.

Questions we get every week

What people ask before they book — answered without the runaround.

Is $200 a wheel really all-in?
For a sound wheel, yes: wheel off, tire off, stripping, blasting, powder, oven cure, tire back on and balancing, with no separate charge for mounting or balancing. The price only moves with the condition of the wheel — a bend straightened first ($150–$300), deep gouges filled (quoted on the photos) or a TPMS sensor that has already failed ($60–$120). A bend on the inner lip can hide behind the tire; if we find one once the tire is off, we tell you before straightening it.
Can I drop off just the wheels?
Yes. Bring them with the tires still on: dismounting, remounting and balancing are inside the $200 either way. They come back coated and balanced in as little as 24 hours, ready to bolt on. If you would rather leave the car, we take the wheels off and put them back on, and if you need to keep driving, bring the wheels in one at a time.
How does powder coating hold up to a Jersey City winter?
Better than paint. Cured powder is a thicker layer that flexes with the metal, and it stands up to road salt, brake dust and wheel cleaners. Applied to bare, blasted aluminum and fully oven-cured, it lasts for years of salted winters. Tougher does not mean curb-proof: a hard hit can still chip the lip. What makes powder peel early is skipped prep — coating sprayed over an old finish or over corrosion.
Can I pick any color, or match my car?
Any color in the powder catalog, in gloss, satin or matte. Black, gunmetal, bronze and silver are the classics, and we show you the options before we quote. What powder cannot do is follow a paint code, because it is not mixed to a formula. If you want one wheel to match three factory ones, or a wheel in your exact body color, that is wet paint, color-matched in our booth.
My wheels are curb-rashed or bent. Can they still be powder coated?
Usually, once they are repaired, and the repair is priced separately because powder covers nothing up. Curb rash and gouges are filled and leveled before coating and quoted on the photos; a bent rim is straightened on a lathe first, at $150–$300 per wheel. A short crack away from the load-bearing areas can sometimes be welded ($200–$400). A crack in the barrel, a spoke or the hub face means a replacement wheel, from $250.
