A door ding does not need paint. If the finish over a dent is unbroken, a technician can work the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel: no filler, no respray, factory paint untouched. That is paintless dent repair, and at Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center in Jersey City it is often the fastest fix on the board.

How Does Paintless Dent Repair Work?

Sheet metal has memory. The technician gets access behind the panel — through a door frame, a tail light opening or a factory access hole — and pushes the low spots up with shaped rods, reading the surface in a reflected light board. High spots are tapped back down from outside: dozens of small moves, not one push.

Nothing is sanded or sprayed, so there is no colour to match and most single dents leave the same day.

Which Dents Qualify for PDR — and Which Do Not?

Three conditions decide it: unbroken paint, metal that is not stretched, and a panel you can reach from behind. Good candidates:

• Door dings from the car parked next to you — our most common PDR job.
• Shopping-cart taps in doors, fenders and quarter panels.
• Hail dimples — round, shallow, many of them, paint intact.
• Broad shallow dents in hoods, roofs and trunk lids.

PDR is the wrong call when:

• The paint is cracked or scratched through. Pushing metal out will not close a split in the finish, and broken paint means rust by spring.
• The dent is a sharp crease. Sharp folds stretch metal, and stretched metal does not shrink back flat.
• The damage sits on the very edge of a panel, or over a brace with nothing to work against.
• It is a plastic bumper cover — plastic needs heat, plastic repair and refinishing. That is bumper repair, not PDR.
• The panel already carries filler. Filler does not move with the metal.

We would rather say so on day one than take money for a repair that will never look right. If a dent fails the test, we quote conventional panel repair and refinishing instead.

Mobile dent repair is fine for a simple ding. A hard one needs trim removal, controlled light and the option to switch to conventional repair when the metal turns out to be stretched.

Hail is priced by panel and by dent count, not per dent: a hood with forty dimples costs far less per dent than a single ding. Hail falls under comprehensive coverage rather than collision, so it is usually treated more gently at renewal, and on a four-figure estimate filing is worth it. We open and document the claim and bill the carrier directly, so you pay only your deductible.

Why Keeping Factory Paint Matters at Trade-In

Paint-depth gauges are standard at dealerships and auction lanes, and a refinished panel reads as accident history whether or not there was an accident. PDR leaves nothing to find: original paint, original thickness, no filler, no blend edge into the next panel. On a lease return, dealers price dings at retail — PDR usually comes in under the chargeback.
