The bumper takes the hit for everybody else — the parking tap, the backed-into pole, the classic rear-end shunt on Route 440. It is the most common repair on our board at Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center in Jersey City, and the honest news most shops skip: the majority of bumper covers can be repaired, not replaced. Plastic welding, rebuilt mounting tabs and refinishing in our own booth start at $450, and a typical bumper is in and out in two to three days.

Repair or Replace? How the Call Is Actually Made

Nobody can make this call from across the parking lot, and nobody should make it from a single photo of a scuff. The cover has to come off, because the decision lives behind it:

• Repair wins when the damage is a scuff, a scrape or a clean crack in the plastic, and the mounting points still hold. Plastic welds from behind, tabs rebuild, and after refinishing the repair disappears.
• Replacement wins when the mounting tabs are shattered in several places, the absorber or reinforcement behind the cover is crushed, or a previous repair is already stacked under the paint. At that point the part price drives the number — quoted by VIN, not guessed.

A shop that quotes a replacement for every scuff is selling parts. A shop that promises a repair without looking behind the cover is guessing. We take it off and look — and if the hit pushed past the bumper into the body, that is collision repair territory — and if the rails behind the absorber moved, structural measurement comes before anything else. We say so before any work starts.

What a Bumper Repair Involves

The cover comes off the car. Everything behind it — clips, absorber, reinforcement bar, sensor brackets — gets inspected and photographed. Cracks are plastic-welded from the back so the repair holds structurally, broken tabs are rebuilt, and the surface is sanded, primed and refinished in our own booth. On silver, white pearl and most metallics the colour is blended into the neighbouring panels so there is no visible edge — that is the difference between a repair you can find later and one you cannot.

Your Bumper Is Full of Electronics

Parking sensors, blind-spot radar, sometimes a camera — on most cars built in the last decade they live in or behind the bumper. After a repair or replacement, the manufacturer's procedure decides whether they need recalibration; the shop's mood does not. We do camera and radar calibration in-house, in the same visit: $250–$450 for one system, $500–$1,200 when several need it. A sensor a few millimetres off still parks the car — it just measures wrong exactly when you need it not to.

Rear-Ended? The Other Driver's Policy Pays

A hit from behind is the classic at-fault claim: the repair belongs on the other driver's liability policy, not on your record and not on your deductible. In New Jersey the choice of shop is yours regardless of whose insurer pays — an adjuster may recommend a network shop but cannot require one. Why Not PDR or a Touch-Up Pen?

Two shortcuts people ask about, and where they actually work. Paintless dent repair is for steel and aluminum panels with unbroken paint — a bumper cover is plastic, so dents in it need heat, plastic repair and refinishing instead. And a touch-up pen on a scraped corner is visible from across the lot; dealer appraisers read brushed touch-ups as concealment.
