Car wraps & chrome delete · Jersey City, NJ
A new color on top, your paint still underneath.
Want a different color without a repaint? We wrap cars in vinyl at our shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave: $2,000–$3,000 for sedans, coupes and small SUVs, $500–$1,000 for a partial wrap (roof, hood, mirrors) and $500–$1,500 for a chrome delete. Paint that is peeling or rusty can be repaired here before the film goes on. Send photos for a written price.
A vinyl wrap changes the color of your car without repainting it: the film goes over the factory paint, and the paint stays underneath. At Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center, wraps are done at our shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave in Jersey City. A full wrap is $2,000–$3,000 for sedans, coupes and small SUVs, a partial wrap is $500–$1,000 and a chrome delete is $500–$1,500. Because this is a body shop, paint that is not fit to wrap can be repaired here first.
What a Wrap Does, and What It Does Not
A wrap is a colored vinyl film laid over the paint. Four things to know before you choose one:
- It is removable. The film can come off later, and the original color is still under it — the main difference from a repaint.
- It shields the paint it covers from sun and light scuffs for as long as it is on the car.
- It is not impact protection. Stone chips and road debris are the job of paint protection film, a clear film made for those hits.
- It is not a repair. Vinyl follows the surface under it, so it shows bad paint instead of hiding it.
Full Wrap, Partial Wrap or Chrome Delete
- Full wrap. Every panel changes color, and the price follows the size of the vehicle: from about $2,000 for a compact car up to $5,000–$10,000 for luxury and exotic cars.
- Partial wrap. Only part of the car is covered: a roof, a hood, the mirrors. $500–$1,000.
- Chrome delete. The bright chrome trim is covered with film, most often gloss or satin black, so the car loses the chrome without losing the trim. $500–$1,500.
Finishes: Gloss, Satin, Matte and Color-Shift
Color is half the choice. The finish is the other half:
- Gloss — reflective, the closest to the look of paint.
- Satin — a soft sheen, between gloss and flat.
- Matte — flat, with no reflection.
- Color-shift — the color changes with the light and the angle you see it from.

The price for your car comes from photos, in writing. If a panel needs paint work before it can be wrapped, that goes in the same quote, so you see the whole cost before you decide.
The Paint Under the Wrap Comes First
A wrap needs sound paint under it. Three things show through the film:
- Peeling clear coat. The edge of every peel reads through the vinyl.
- Rust. It shows through too. Small rust is repaired first; where it has eaten through the metal, the panel is replaced, not patched.
- Fresh body filler. An unfinished, unpainted repair shows through as well.
Weak paint has a second cost: when the wrap comes off, it can pull that paint off with it. So we look at the paint in your photos before we quote and tell you plainly when a panel is not ready for film.
That is where a body shop helps: we can fix the panel first — paint work in our own booth, scratch repair or rust repair, whichever it needs — and the film goes on after that.
Wrap, Repaint or Paint Protection Film?
- You want a new color and the option to go back. That is a wrap.
- The paint itself is failing. That is paint work first; a wrap will not fix it. A full respray or color change in paint is quoted after we inspect the car.
- You like the color and want to keep chips off it. That is paint protection film, which is clear and built for impacts.
If we think a wrap is the wrong answer for your car, we say so before you pay for film.
How to Get a Wrap Quote
The quote is free and starts with photos:
- Photograph the car in daylight: all four sides, plus a close-up of any peeling, rust, chips or earlier repairs.
- Add the year, make and model, and say what you want: a full wrap, a partial wrap or a chrome delete.
- Name the color and finish — gloss, satin, matte or color-shift.
