Alloy wheel being refinished after curb rash repair

Wheel & rim repair Β· Jersey City, NJ

Curb rash, bent rims, colour changes.

Scraped a wheel on a Jersey City curb? Most alloys come back looking new for far less than a replacement β€” refinished, powder coated or straightened in our own shop. Bring one wheel or all four; we will tell you straight when a rim is not safe to repair.

Wheels take more abuse than anything else on a car in Jersey City: a granite curb while parking, a pothole on Route 440. Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center straightens, repairs and refinishes alloy wheels at 18-24 Bayview Ave. Every wheel starts the same way: cosmetic damage separated from structural. One is a finish job; the other decides whether the wheel is safe.

What Kind of Wheel Damage Do You Have?

Almost everything falls into three groups:

  • Curb rash and scrapes. The face and lip are ground up, but the wheel is round and holds air. Purely cosmetic β€” sand, fill, refinish, clear, like any other cosmetic paint damage.
  • Bent rim. If the bend is in the flange β€” the lip the tire bead seats against β€” and the wheel holds air, it can usually be straightened on a lathe, then refinished. If the barrel itself is deformed, the wheel gets replaced, not massaged.
  • Cracked or deeply gouged rim. Welding works on some cast aluminum wheels when the crack is short and away from the load path. A crack in a load-bearing area β€” the barrel, a spoke, the hub face β€” gets replaced. We turn down repairs we would not drive on ourselves.

Is a Bent Wheel Dangerous to Drive?

Vibration is the symptom worth acting on: a shake through the steering wheel that grows with speed, a slow leak that keeps returning, or uneven tire wear on one corner. A bent wheel loads the wheel bearing, tie rod and bushings and pulls the alignment off, so a cheap problem becomes a suspension bill. The impact that bends a rim can bend a control arm, so we check the whole corner. Treat a crack as urgent β€” aluminum cracks spread.

Powder Coating, Wet Paint or a Machined Face?

  • Powder coating β€” stripped, blasted, electrostatically coated, oven-cured. Toughest against curbs, brake dust and road salt; the standard choice for a full set or a color change.
  • Wet paint β€” sprayed in the same booth and color-matched like a body panel. Right when one wheel has to disappear next to three untouched ones.
  • Machined or diamond-cut faces β€” the bright, lathe-turned look under clear. It cannot be sprayed back on; the face is re-cut on a lathe and re-cleared, which costs more.

Color change is also a styling option: satin black, gunmetal or bronze on a set of four costs far less while the wheels are already off and stripped.

How Much Does Wheel and Rim Repair Cost?

Rim repair starts at $99 per wheel. Typical ranges below β€” diameter, finish and depth move the number:

WorkWhat it involvesTypical price
Curb rash refinishSand, fill, refinish, clear coat$150–$350 per wheel
Powder coatingStrip, blast, coat, oven-curefrom $75 per wheel
Machined / diamond-cut faceFace re-cut on a lathe, re-cleared$250–$400 per wheel
Bent rim straighteningStraightened on a lathe, leak-tested$150–$300 per wheel
Straighten and refinishBoth, one visit$250–$500 per wheel
Crack repair, where safeWeld, re-machine, pressure test$200–$400 per wheel
Color change, set of fourPowder coat or wet paint, all four$600–$1,200 per set
Replacement wheelSourced, mounted and balancedfrom $250 per wheel

A deeper breakdown of what drives these numbers β€” and when a scraped wheel stops being cosmetic β€” is in our guide to curb rash repair costs. Dismounting the tire, remounting and balancing are included. TPMS sensors are handled whenever a tire comes off: inspected, reused if healthy, relearned before delivery. A failed sensor adds $60–$120 per wheel.

How Long Does It Take?

A refinish or straightening job runs one to two business days per wheel; powder coating two to three, since the wheel is stripped and oven-cured. Bring wheels in one at a time and the car stays drivable, or leave all four and collect it in three to four business days. Open daily 9am to 8pm, serving Jersey City, Bayonne, Hoboken, Union City, Newark, Kearny, Secaucus and Harrison.

Lease Return? Curb Rash Is on the Inspector's List

Lease returns are the most common reason wheels come to us. Inspectors write up curb rash and price it at dealer retail, so refinishing four wheels beforehand almost always costs less than the charge-back. Handle dents and interior wear in the same visit β€” see lease return restoration. Impact damage belongs with collision repair, since it is often covered.

Photograph each damaged wheel straight on and at an angle and send them for a free photo estimate β€” a real price and an honest verdict on repair versus replacement, the same business day. Or call (551) 325-3030.

Questions we get every week

What people ask before they book β€” answered without the runaround.

How much does wheel repair cost?
Refinishing curb rash on one alloy typically runs $150 to $350, powder coating starts at $75 per rim, and straightening a bent wheel is usually $150 to $300. A full colour change on a set of four is quoted after we see the wheels β€” send photos for a real number.
Can a bent rim be repaired or does it need replacing?
A bend in the flange that still holds air can normally be straightened. A deformed barrel, a cracked wheel or a bend on a load-bearing area gets replaced β€” we will not return a wheel we would not put on our own car.
Do you repair cracked wheels?
Some castings can be welded, but only where the crack is not in a load-bearing area, and only if the wheel passes inspection afterwards. Where it does not, we say so and quote a replacement instead. A failed wheel at speed is not worth the saving.
How long does wheel repair take?
One or two wheels are usually a same-day or next-day job; powder coating a full set takes two to three days because each rim is stripped, coated and cured. If you need the car in the meantime, we can work through the wheels in batches.
Is curb rash worth fixing before a lease return?
Almost always. Lease inspectors price wheel damage at dealer retail, which is routinely several times what refinishing costs here. Wheels are one of the three items we see charged most often at turn-in, alongside dings and scuffed bumpers.
