Frame & unibody repair · Jersey City, NJ
Measured to the millimetre, or not repaired at all.
Frame and unibody repair starts with a computerized measurement of your car against factory reference points and ends only when the numbers are back within tolerance — pulled on the bench, sectioned or replaced by the manufacturer’s procedure, with aluminum in its own work area. Priced from the teardown, documented for your insurer, verified before paint.
A frame or unibody that is out of dimension is the one repair a car cannot hide. Doors that no longer close cleanly, a hood gap that opens on one side, tires that scrub after an alignment, a steering wheel that sits off-center on a straight road — those are the symptoms of structure that was pushed a few millimetres from where the factory put it. At Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center in Jersey City, structural repair starts with a computerized measurement of the car, not with a visual guess, and ends only when the numbers are back within factory tolerance. If they cannot come back, we say so before the first pull.
Frame Repair vs Unibody Repair: What Your Car Actually Has
Pickups and most body-on-frame SUVs carry a separate ladder frame with the body bolted on top. Nearly every car, crossover and EV built in the last thirty years is a unibody: the floor, pillars, rails and inner structure are one welded shell, and the outer panels hang on it. Both can be straightened, but the rules differ. A ladder frame is measured and pulled as a unit on the bench. A unibody is a set of engineered crumple zones and high-strength sections, and the manufacturer's repair procedure says exactly which parts may be pulled back into shape, which must be sectioned at a defined line, and which must be replaced whole and welded — steel and aluminum each with their own tooling. We follow the procedure for your VIN, not a rule of thumb.
How Structural Repair Works Here
- Teardown and measurement. The damaged area is stripped to bare structure and the body is measured against factory reference points with a computerized system. This is where hidden damage shows up — a rail kinked behind an intact bumper cover, a strut tower moved a few millimetres — and it goes into the estimate as a documented supplement, with photos, before any straightening starts.
- Anchoring and pulling. The car is anchored to the frame bench and the structure is pulled back toward factory dimensions in controlled steps, re-measured after each pull. Metal that has been stretched too far or has kinked past its limit is not pulled — it is sectioned or replaced, because pulled-back kinked steel does not crumple the way the engineers intended in the next accident.
- Sectioning, replacement and welding. Rails, aprons, rocker panels and pillars are sectioned or replaced according to the procedure — the right joint type, the right welding method for that steel, structural adhesive and rivets where aluminum or mixed materials call for them, and corrosion protection restored inside the cavities you will never see.
- Verification. The finished structure is measured again and the printout goes into your file. Suspension and steering points are checked, the car is aligned, and any camera or radar on the affected end goes through ADAS calibration in the same visit.
Only then does the car move to the paint shop — panels back on, gaps set, colour blended. Paint on a car whose structure was never verified is decoration over a problem.
Aluminum and Mixed-Material Structures
Audi, Tesla, Mercedes, Land Rover and the aluminum F-150 mix aluminum with ultra-high-strength steel and join them with rivets and adhesive rather than spot welds. Aluminum work happens in a separate area with its own tools and fasteners so that no steel dust ever contaminates an aluminum panel, and structural aluminum that is deformed is replaced rather than heated and pulled. On EVs the structural work also has a boundary we name plainly: anything involving the high-voltage pack internals or its mounting structure is documented and coordinated with the manufacturer's procedures, and if a repair falls outside what we can verify to specification, you hear that at the estimate — not after the deposit. Our honest write-up of where those limits sit is in what a "Tesla certified" body shop actually means.
What Frame and Structural Repair Costs in Jersey City
| Job | Typical price | Time in the shop |
|---|---|---|
| Computerized measurement and teardown | included in the structural estimate | 1–2 days |
| Frame or unibody straightening on the bench | several thousand and up, priced from the teardown | 1–3 weeks |
| Rail, apron or pillar sectioning / replacement | procedure-driven, quoted by VIN | within the same 1–3 weeks |
| Camera / radar calibration after the work | $250–$450 one system · $500–$1,200 several | same visit, in-house |
Nobody can price structural work from a walk-around, and a shop that does is guessing with your car. The number is written after teardown and measurement, in the insurer's own estimating format, and it changes only for what the teardown documents. A structural repair against a $500 or $1,000 deductible is an insurance claim every time — the full decision table for every panel on the car is in our body shop price guide, and the realistic timeline for each type of job is in how long collision repair takes in New Jersey.
Repair or Total Loss?
Structural damage is what pushes a car toward the insurer's total-loss threshold, because rails and pillars are the expensive part of the estimate. "Totaled" is an economic verdict, not a mechanical one: the carrier compares the repair cost plus salvage value against the car's cash value, and the line sits differently on a three-year-old SUV than on a twelve-year-old sedan. We write the structural estimate the same way whether it lands under or over that line, and we tell you where it landed and why. If you would rather keep the car, we explain what a branded title means for its future value first. The whole calculation, including how to dispute a low valuation, is in what happens when your car is totaled in New Jersey.
Insurance, Steering and What Happens to the Car's Value
A structural claim is exactly the moment an adjuster is most likely to point you toward a network shop. In New Jersey the choice of shop is yours by regulation — an insurer may recommend, but cannot require, and picking your own shop cannot raise your deductible. We open the claim, document the teardown, negotiate the supplement and bill the carrier directly; you pay the deductible. And because a structural repair on the record lowers what a dealer will pay for the car later, we hand you the measurement printout and the photo file that a diminished value claim against the at-fault driver's policy is built on. Most owners never file one because nobody tells them it exists.
Signs Your Car Needs Structural Measurement
- Uneven or shifted panel gaps — hood, doors, trunk — after a collision that "only" damaged the bumper
- Doors, hood or hatch that no longer close with the same effort or sound
- Steering wheel off-center or the car pulling on a straight road after an alignment
- Uneven tire wear appearing weeks after a repair somewhere else
- Airbags deployed — the impact was strong enough that the structure must be checked, not assumed
- A previous repair with filler or paint on frame rails, rocker panels or pillars — measure before you buy the car
Two of those on one car are enough reason to measure it. Send 4–8 photos of the damage — whole car, the hit at an angle, the panel gaps — and a real estimator prices the visible part the same business day, in writing, free: start the photo estimate. If the car is not safe to drive after the accident, call (551) 325-3030 first: towing intake answers around the clock, the tow comes straight to the shop instead of a storage yard, and the measurement starts the next morning.
