Window tinting · Jersey City, NJ
Less glare, less heat, more privacy.
We tint with XPEL and Geoshield film (dyed, carbon or ceramic) in our own shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave. A full car is typically $350 to $700, depending on the film, the number of windows and the vehicle. New Jersey allows film on the windshield and the front side windows only with an MVC medical exemption; the rear side windows and the rear window can be tinted without one. Window tinting at Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center is done in our own shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave in Jersey City, with XPEL and Geoshield film in three types: dyed, carbon and ceramic. A full car is typically $350 to $700, depending on the film type, the number of windows and the vehicle. New Jersey allows film on the windshield and the front side windows only with a medical exemption approved by the Motor Vehicle Commission; the rear side windows and the rear window may be tinted without one.
What Window Tint Does
Film works on the glass it covers, which for most New Jersey drivers means the rear half of the car. It does four things:
- Cuts glare. Headlights in the mirror and low sun through the rear glass are easier on the eyes.
- Cuts heat. Less of the sun's heat comes through the glass, which matters in a car parked on the street all day.
- Blocks UV. Ultraviolet light is what fades seats, door panels and trim, so the interior keeps its color longer.
- Adds privacy. Passengers and whatever is in the cargo area are harder to see from the sidewalk.
Dyed, Carbon or Ceramic: Which Film?
We install XPEL and Geoshield window film. The three types differ in what is inside the film, and so does the price:
- Dyed film. The lowest-priced type: a dyed layer darkens the glass for privacy and less glare, and holds back the least heat of the three.
- Carbon film. Carbon particles in the film stop more heat than dye alone, with a dark, non-reflective look.
- Ceramic film. Ceramic particles stop the most heat of the three, even in a lighter shade. It costs the most and is the one to pick when a cooler cabin matters more than a dark look.
Shade and film type are separate choices, and a darker film is not automatically a cooler one. Tell us what bothers you most and we will recommend both.
How Much Does Window Tinting Cost in Jersey City?
The honest answer is a range: a full car is typically $350 to $700. Anything smaller or more involved is quoted from your photos.
| Job | What it involves | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Full car | Dyed, carbon or ceramic film, in the shade you choose | typically $350–$700 |
| Partial job | Only some of the windows, not the whole car | quoted from the photos |
| Old film removal | Bubbled or purple film taken off before re-tinting | quoted from the photos |
Three things decide where a car lands in that range:
- The film type. Dyed costs the least, ceramic the most.
- The number of windows. A coupe has fewer than an SUV with a third row.
- The vehicle. Large or sharply curved glass takes more film and more work.
Is Window Tint Legal in New Jersey?
On the rear glass, yes; on the front glass, only with a medical exemption:
- Windshield and front side windows. Film is allowed only with a medical exemption approved by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
- Rear side windows and rear window. They may be tinted, and New Jersey sets no darkness limit for them.
This is a summary of the state's rule, not legal advice; whether you qualify for an exemption is a question for the MVC and your physician.
Tinting the Front Windows With a Medical Exemption
The paperwork comes first, the film second:
- Apply to the MVC. The application is form MVC Sunscreening 1, and one part of it is filled in by your physician.
- Receive the approval. When the MVC approves the exemption, the driver receives an approval document, form MVC Sunscreening 4. It is valid for 48 months and must stay in the car.
- Bring the MVC approval with you. Mention it in your photo request and have it with you when you come in.
Old Tint That Bubbled or Turned Purple
Bubbled or purple film cannot be repaired, and new film does not go on top of it: the old film comes off first, then the glass is tinted again. Removal is quoted from the photos, so photograph every window with old film, including the rear one.
More Than Glass: Film and Coatings for the Paint
For the paint, the same shop installs paint protection film against stone chips, applies ceramic coating for gloss and easier washing, and does vinyl wraps and chrome delete.
How to Get a Window Tint Quote
The quote is free and starts with photos:
- Take 4–8 photos in daylight: both sides of the car, the rear, and a close-up of any old film.
- Add the year, make and model, and tell us which windows you want tinted.
- Name the film type (dyed, carbon or ceramic), or ask us which one fits.
