Paint correction Β· Jersey City, NJ
Swirls polished out, gloss back in.
Swirl marks, haze and light scratches live in the clear coat, and a machine polish takes them out. We do paint correction in our shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave: one step from $499 for a sedan, $599 for an SUV and $699 for a truck or van, with two and three steps for deeper defects. A whole car takes 1β2 days. Send photos for a written price the same business day.
Paint correction is a machine polish that takes swirl marks, haze and light scratches out of your car's clear coat, so the paint reflects cleanly again. At Waxman of Tristate Auto Body & Collision Center we do it in our shop at 18-24 Bayview Ave in Jersey City: from $499 for a sedan, $599 for an SUV and $699 for a truck or van in one step. A whole car takes 1β2 days.
What Paint Correction Removes and What It Cannot
The marks that make paint look tired usually sit in its top layer, the clear coat. A polisher levels that layer until shallow defects stop catching the light.
- Swirl marks. The fine circular scratches that show in direct sun, mostly left by brush car washes and dry towels.
- Haze and dullness. Paint that has lost its depth after years of washing and weather.
- Light scratches and scuffs. Marks your fingernail glides over, and paint transferred from another car's bumper or a garage column.
- Light water-spot etching. Rings left in the clear coat where hard water dried on the paint.
Polishing takes material away; it cannot put any back. A scratch that catches a fingernail has cut through the clear coat, and a stone chip has lost its paint: those need touch-up or paint, not polish. We point them out before the work starts, and what each fix costs is on our car scratch repair page.
One-Step, Two-Step or Three-Step
The steps are passes with progressively finer abrasives. More steps take out deeper defects, and take longer.
- One-step. A single polish for paint in decent shape, with light swirls and haze. It brings back most of the gloss for the least time and money.
- Two-step. A cutting compound first, then a finishing polish. For paint with wash swirls and light scratches all over.
- Three-step. A heavier cut, a second cut and a finishing polish, for neglected paint with deep swirls and heavy haze.
Clear coat is thin, so the aim is to take off only as much as the defect needs. That is why the number of steps is recommended after we see your paint, not before, and why we tell you when a lighter step is enough.
How Much Does Paint Correction Cost in Jersey City?
Starting prices for the whole car:
| Paint correction | Sedan | SUV | Truck & van |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-step | from $499 | from $599 | from $699 |
| Two-step | from $799 | from $899 | from $999 |
| Three-step | from $999 | from $1,199 | from $1,299 |
The exact figure depends on the size of the vehicle and the condition of the paint, and you get it in writing from your photos. A single panel, such as a hood or a door after a parking-lot scuff, is quoted from the photos too.
Paint Correction Before a Ceramic Coating
A coating locks in whatever is under it, so polishing always comes first. Every ceramic coating package here already includes paint correction: for a sedan from $899 with one polishing step, $1,099 with two and $1,299 with three. If you are planning a coating, ask for the package and do not pay for the polish twice.
Polishing on its own adds no protection. Brush car washes put most swirls on the paint in the first place, and they will put them back. To keep the gloss, coat the car, put paint protection film on the front where stone chips land, or wash it by hand with clean towels.
Selling the Car or Returning a Lease
Polished paint reads as a well-kept car. Before a sale, a one-step polish is usually the cheapest way to make the paint look its best in the listing photos. Before a lease turn-in, it takes out the light scratches and scuffs; dents and deeper damage are covered on our lease return repair page.
Fresh Paint Is Polished as Part of the Repair
After a repair, the new clear coat cures in our booth and the panel is then cut and polished to match the rest of the car. That is part of the paint job, not a separate order. How the color is matched and blended is on our auto painting page.
How Long Does Paint Correction Take?
A whole car takes 1β2 days in the shop. A three-step correction on a large SUV sits at the long end of that; a one-step polish on a sedan at the short end. The day you can pick the car up comes with your written quote.
How to Get a Paint Correction Quote
The quote is free and starts with photos:
- Shoot in direct sun or under a bright light. Swirls only show in a reflection: take close-ups of the hood, the roof edge and a door, plus the whole car from each side.
- Name the car. Year, make and model tell us which price column applies: sedan, SUV, or truck and van.
- Say what bothers you and whether you are thinking about a coating or film afterward.
